Cooper’s baseball diary
BY COOPER FELIEN GATZMER
The Longfellow Teddies weren’t doing so well in the first half of the season, but we made it to the playoffs. We lost the championship, but we were the runners up.
May 9th was our third game. It was an accidental victory, and we didn’t know we had won until it was over. There were only four people warming up on the opposite team. We waited until the game was supposed to start.
The
opposite team forfeited due to a lack of players. We moved on to another diamond unaware that the team we were supposed to play had disappeared. We had won, and we hadn’t noticed! There surprisingly was a spare team: Liga Hispana De Beisbol! They were unorganized, no uniforms (no real coach that I could see) and they all spoke Spanish and no English. The game started. They were the home team so we batted first. Our first batter hit a solid double. The next three hitters struck out and he couldn’t make it home.
When their first batter got up to bat he was walked due to four balls fromour pitcher. The game trailed on. This team was good. We had no way to win. They racked up points. We caught an occasional fly ball, but they won 10 to 6, and the worst thing about it was that it was freezing cold, and the small refreshment table had nothing but cold drinks. The game came to an end. They won, or did they? The team we played beat us but the team we didn’t play lost to us by forfeit. The coach forced confidence in us. He said we’ll win the next game.
We had a victory the next Wednesday. We demolished them. The coach is negative, then positive. The next Wednesday was once again a victory. They got two homers but we
pulled it off. The other coach screams and yells. Our coach says great job. Next Wednesday we got two homers and they got two homers. We lost 11 to 5. Overall in the season we won seven games and we lost seven games but during the playoffs we won all of the games but lost championship 13 to11. I’m looking forward to next year because most of our players were 10, and it was an 11 and under league, so next year we’ll have more experienced players.
