Applause for tornado cleanup

The last thing I thought I’d see Wednesday, Aug. 19, was a huge branch from my nearly 100 year-old Silver Maple tree lying on top of my crumpled car. But despite that, I was heartened by the quick and efficient action of the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board’s Forestry crew after the tornado hit south Minneapolis.
They were there within minutes and wasted no time beginning the difficult task of clearing streets of downed trees and other debris. They also offered assistance and reassurance to my neighbors, some who were in shock over what happened so fast.

The neighborhood where I have lived for more than 40 years looks rather bare now, but I know that the Park Board is committed to maintaining and restoring one of our city’s most precious natural resources. Replacing decades-old trees won’t happen overnight, but through the caring expertise of the Forestry staff, trees will once again shade the streets in this neighborhood for future generations to enjoy.

Harriet Solomon,
Minneapolis
