Shir Tikvah Celebrates 25th Anniversary

Shir Tikvah, a progressive Reform congregation, will celebrate its 25th anniversary during a festive weekend. Founding rabbi emerita, Stacy K. Offner, and president of the Union for Reform Judaism, Rabbi Rick Jacobs, will be among the guest speakers. A song commissioned in honor of the 25th anniversary, composed by the nationally known Jewish songwriter Noah Aronson, will premiere at the event. The festivities will continue at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, with a dance party and live ’80s music at the Metropolitan Ballroom in Minneapolis. Registration Opens for ARK Summer Enrichment Program
New Creation Baptist Church, at 1414 E. 48th St., offers a summer program from June 17 to Aug. 18 for youth ages 3 to 16. One courageous 15-year-old child, supported by her persistent grandmother, not only escaped being trafficked but helped St. Paul police arrest five traffickers and free 10 other children and vulnerable adults. Learn more at a small interactive workshop led by Linda Miller, executive director of Civil Society of Minnesota, an organization that provides outreach to both domestic and foreign-born human trafficking victims in Minnesota. A home cooked meal (free-will donations accepted), prepared by food lover and great cook Mark Van Steenwyk of The Mennonite Worker, will be served in the fellowship hall. Activities are available for young children. Afterwards, see a film and participate in a discussion of the question: “How should we then live?” This month’s film is “Pray the Devil Back to Hell,” the astonishing story of the Muslim and Christian Liberian women who took on the warlords and regime of dictator Charles Taylor in the midst of a brutal civil war, and won a once unimaginable peace for their shattered country. It is a compelling testimony of how grassroots activism can alter the history of nations. The series is sponsored by the Minnesota Peacebuilding Leadership Institute.

Grief Groups in South Minneapolis

The 2013 summer series is offered by the South Minneapolis Coalition for Grief Support. The groups are designed for adults experiencing grief as a result of the death of a loved one. The evenings begin with presentations by clergy and grief educators and continue with small groups led by trained facilitators. Suggested donation is $1 per session; groups are open-ended: You can stay for one or both parts of each session and attend as many or as few as you wish.
