William Martinez, a member of The Minnesota Immigrant Rights ActionCoalition (MIRAC), led cheers Friday afternoon, Nov.24, at Bloomington and Lake Street [STOP THE RAIDS!] to protest the immigration raids being conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in St. James and Madelia. [IMMIGRANT RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS!] MIRAC calls for an immediate moratorium on the raids and deportations that tear apart our families and our communities and immediate legalization of all immigrants. We call on our elected officials to enact these policies and to uphold the value of all members of our society regardless of race, nationality or immigration status. [THE PEOPLE UNITED WILL NEVER BE DEFEATED!] [EL PUEBLO UNIDOS JAMAS SERA VENCIDO!] About 50 people participated, including members of the Workers International League and ministers from the United Church of Christ.

Afghanistan and opium: the big payoff!

We have a choice of two general assumptions about Afghanistan. We can assume that opium grows in Afghanistan because it has always grown there, and nobody can do anything about it, and that Hamid Karzai and President Bush would really like to do something about it, but they wouldn’t want to interfere with local customs, and that it’s a great mystery about what happens to the opium after it’s grown, and that the opium is just a side issue and shouldn’t distract us from the mission to establish democracy in that country.

The Chicken and I

The Chicken and I

If you went walking through a certain block in Nokomis neighborhood last year, you might have heard a very funny sound. “Some people thought it was a sick dog,” says Paul Brazelton. Nope, it was Stripes, Brazelton’s Bantam rooster.
“It was awful!” continues Brazelton. “He crowed as soon as the sun hit the sky, and didn’t stop till the sun went down. Sometimes he crowed in the middle of the night. He was super aggressive and chased the hens around the yard. My wife and kids took to carrying a tennis racket through the yard to fend him off. It was a learning experience.”

Some surprises on election day

Although it wasn’t really a surprise. The polls had predicted it. It was still amazing that the U. S. elected Barack Obama President. So, before we get back to business as usual, we should take a moment and remember how thrilled and happy and proud we were when it happened.

Local authors deserve to be present(s) under the Christmas tree

There are some excellent books out there this holiday season written by local authors that deserve a local audience. I don’t know if it will reduce the carbon footprint, but if you buy locally you’ll probably end up with a better idea of who you are and how you think.

New film “Ana’s Playground” On location in Cedar-Riverside

“People need to know that 2,000 hildren are killed or injured in war everyday. And that one in ten combatants is a child.”—Twin Cities filmmaker Eric Howell

Over the past five years, writer/director Eric Howell has been on a mission to raise awareness of how millions of children are ravaged by war. With over 300,000 children under the age of 18 fighting in armed conflicts worldwide, Howell and others were determined to make a film about it. The result of that effort is “Ana’s Playground,” a short film with an award-winning script to be shot on location outside a high-rise in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood—home to many Somali refugees, among thousands who have settled in the Twin Cities since Somalia’s civil war erupted in 1991.
